The Challenge

Many new entrepreneurs in Denmark struggle with one of the most essential yet intimidating aspects of running a business: managing their finances. Bookkeeping, VAT reporting, budgeting, and understanding taxation create confusion and stress—especially for international founders navigating Danish regulations for the first time.

Without a clear understanding of their company’s financial flows, entrepreneurs risk making costly mistakes, missing deadlines, or limiting their growth. This workshop series addressed these barriers by giving participants the tools and confidence to take control of their business finances.

Our Approach

Chosen by Erhvervshus Hovedstaden and Iværksætterdanmark, Aalborg Institute for Development (AID) developed and delivered a practical, hands-on workshop series titled Workshopforløb om virksomhedsøkonomi (Business Economics). The course consisted of four structured sessions covering the core pillars of business finance:

Introduction to Bookkeeping – Understanding expense tracking, deductible costs, and proper financial record-keeping.

Mastering Value Added Tax (VAT) – Learning Danish VAT rules, reporting procedures, deadlines, and compliance best practices.

Strategic Budgeting – Developing and applying different budget types to strengthen financial decision-making.

Financial Planning & Taxation – Interpreting financial statements, balance sheets, and tax-related data to gain full insight into the company’s financial health.

The workshop series was delivered both online and in-person, ensuring accessibility for entrepreneurs across Denmark.

Aalborg Institute for Development’s Role

As the selected provider, AID delivered expert instruction, structured financial learning materials, and practical exercises tailored to entrepreneurs with little or no prior financial experience. Our goal was not only to teach the theory, but to ensure participants could independently manage their business finances with accuracy and confidence.

Looking Ahead

Building financial literacy among Denmark’s international entrepreneurs strengthens the foundation for sustainable business growth. With continuous demand and strong outcomes, this workshop series demonstrates the importance—and the impact—of accessible, practical financial education.
